Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

Red Yucca Seeds Are Stacked Like Pringles

Just a few days after discovering that the five seed pods on my Red Yucca (Hesperaloe parviflora) bloom spike were rattling (post), they opened up.

I don’t need more Red Yucca plants here, nor do I have the space to propagate them, but I was curious to see how they looked so I harvested them.

The pods were dry and very easy to pry apart. Each pod had three chambers and each chamber broke into two pieces. Inside each of those halves were several black seeds, stacked together tightly (like Pringles!).

I have kept the seeds, in case I find someone who wants them. For instance, there are seed exchanges at Native Plant Society of Texas meetings, and there are also seed libraries being developed by Central Texas Seed Savers.
