Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

New Flowers On The Texas Barometer Bush

Leucophyllum frutescens goes by a number of common names, as do many plants. The options I know of are: Cenizo, Purple Sage, Texas Ranger, Texas Barometer Bush, Texas Silverleaf, Texas Sage, or Silverleaf. I choose to call this a Texas Barometer Bush, so as not to be confused with the other “sage” (Salvia) plants that I have here.

These were the first flowers I had seen on this shrub since planting. The blooms appeared about a week after we had rain, which fits with the reported behavior of this plant — hence the name Barometer Bush. Bees and butterflies are visiting.

  1. In our region, they only bloom after rain. This week I learned that “rain plant” (also called “rain lily”) also only blooms after rain but the reason is the ions coming from the atmosphere around thunder and lightening. Nature is my favorite teacher. H
