Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

Sow Thunder Turf In The Fall/Winter, Yes Or No?

I recently reported that there is one area of Thunder Turf native grasses that I want to reseed, but I am hindered at the moment because the builder next-door is over-watering the new turf there, and my garden floods on that side every morning. I hope that once the next-door house is occupied, the watering will be much less and the daily flooding will stop.

I reached out to Native American Seed, where I buy most of my seed, to ask whether it was getting too late in the year to sow this particular grass mix (once the flooding stops), or whether I should wait until spring.

The short answer is yes, I should wait.

Thunder Turf is a grass mix that germinates when the soil is warm. This document from The Natural Gardener has more useful information about how to grow and care for Thunder Turf.
