In front of our house are two Live Oak trees, variety unknown (perhaps Quercus fusiformis?), planted by the builder before we moved here. That does not seem the best choice of tree in this location, given their potential mature size and susceptibility to oak wilt. If they had been unhealthy, I would not have hesitated to replace them last year, but they seem to be doing well, so I have left them.
Something I have just learned is that while Live Oaks might appear to be evergreen, they are actually “tardily deciduous” in that they shed the previous year’s leaves in February or March as new leaves emerge. This is exactly what is happening with one of my Live Oak trees, and presumably the other will follow suit soon.
