I’ve seen a few butterflies here this year so far, but there is not much for them to eat yet. They’re also tricky to photograph as they are flitting around — I usually end up discarding tens of photos just to get one that will do, and sometimes I fail altogether. Anyway, this Common Sootywing (Pholisora catullus) stopped long enough on a volunteer Slender Vetch (Vicia ludoviciana) plant for me to snap a fair picture and get the identification in iNaturalist.
I don’t have any host plants here for this butterfly, to my knowledge, but any nectar plant will provide food. And this is why my lawn is not pure grass.
