Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

Storm Damage To The Three Sisters Garden

The night of April 9, 2024, just three days after sowing bean seeds in my Three Sisters mounds, there was a fierce storm with 2.1 inches of rain/hail and high winds.

Most of the garden was not affected, but some nearby Firewheel plants near the mounds were knocked over, which in turn knocked over a few of the corn stalks. Also, some of the soil was washed from the top of the mounds, which exposed the germinating bean seeds that had been planted 1-inch down.

I have so many Firewheel plants here that there didn’t seem any need to preserve the ones that were knocked over. So I cut those down to be composted.

I also adjusted the soil so as to lightly cover the germinating bean seeds, and propped up the corn stalks that most needed it. It is of course ironic that in this Three Sisters Garden scenario, the corn stalks are supposed to be strong enough to support the beans. They might need some help with that, once I see how things develop.
