Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

Two Pretty Spiders

I often encounter spiders here, hopefully before I have accidentally walked through their webs (which does sometimes happen, especially when they are across pathways). Here are two examples of spiders who were just quietly going about their business in the garden.

Yellow Garden Spider (Argiope aurantia)

A distinctive feature of the Yellow Garden Spider is production of a stabilimentum, which is a zigzag pattern of silk in the center of their web. This particular web was among the Lanceleaf Coreopsis (Coreopsis lanceolata) in the pot containing my rain gauge.

Western Spotted Orbweaver (Neoscona oaxacensis)

In contrast, this Western Spotted Orbweaver spider does not make a stabilimentum. This one’s web was on the west-facing siding of the house.
