Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

Sleeping Bees

This garden attracts a lot of bees of different types and sizes. Most of our native bees in Texas are solitary and one of the most delightful things to see in the early morning are bees that are still sleeping on plants.

Here are a couple of Eastern Carpenter Bees (Xylocopa virginica) that I saw recently. One is on the spent flower head of a Mealy Blue Sage (Salvia farinacea) and the other is on a leaf of the Texas Mountain Laurel (Sophora secundiflora) tree. Mealy Blue Sage is very popular with many kinds of bee, and the Texas Mountain Laurel is nearby.
