Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

Pond #4: Construction

Finally, I have a pond!

The construction took two days (the hole had previously been dug). On the first day, a mound for the waterfall was built and the pump equipment was installed. A liner was laid and large “moss rocks” were placed.

On the second day, smaller river rocks were added. Then the pond was filled, drained, and filled again. After that there were a few more hours of tweaking, adjusting, and addition of landscaping soil and mulch around the edge.

It looks rather stark at the moment without any plants in or around it, and it will probably take a year or two to settle in. But the water immediately began to attract wildlife and within hours a dove came to drink. Dragonflies have been circling the area.
