Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

Clover “Cover Crop”

In front of the pond I have planted some short perennials so that the view of the pond from the patio isn’t blocked.

Earlier this year (before the pond), that area was packed with Firewheel aka Indian Blanket (Gaillardia pulchella), which grew to over 3 feet tall. Therefore, the ground in that area likely has a significant seed bank for these taller plants, but I will cut them short if they block my view!

As a counter attack of sorts against the Firewheels, around the new perennials I have spread seed for White Prairie Clover (Dalea candida) to function as a healing cover crop in that it will hopefully reduce soil erosion and add nitrogen to the soil, while staying short. (I will note, however, that when I sowed this same seed last year, to my knowledge none of it grew. I’m giving it one more chance.)
