Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

Thunder Turf Spring Mowing

Thunder Turf is a blend of three short prairie grasses (Buffalograss, Blue Grama, Curly Mesquite). Clearing Bermudagrass away from an area around the perimeter of the back garden and seeding these native grasses was an early months-long project here.

This grassy area is now quite well established. It’s not pure, in that I know Bermudagrass is creeping in from neighbors, and there are some non-grass volunteers that I’ve allowed to stay, e.g., Bluebonnets, Frogfruit. My Thunder Turf gets no supplemental water, so it does go brown in winter and times of drought. So the maintenance is low, including the fact that it only gets mown twice a year!

This week was one of those mowing times, so here are some photos.
