Before moving to Seguin, I lived in Houston, Texas. It was there, about seven years ago, that I became aware of native plants and their importance for a healthy environment. There was one particular friend (Stephanie Harp) who inspired and guided me in my early days as a native plant gardener before I had even heard of the Native Plant Society of Texas (of which I am now a member).
Another valuable inspiration for me was Lauren Jansen Simpson, creator of St. Julian’s Crossing, an urban wildlife garden in Houston. My own humble and stumbling efforts to create a wildlife habitat in Seguin are in fact somewhat modeled on what she has achieved.
There has recently been published an article about the St. Julian’s Crossing garden in The Leader, and I share it here because it’s a nice summary of what Lauren is doing and why.
And now that I am in Seguin, embarking on my own urban wildlife project, I have discovered a host of helpful companions, encouragers, teachers, and mentors within the Guadalupe County Texas Master Naturalist and Guadalupe County Native Plant Society of Texas groups. Thank you, all!
