Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

More Plants Waking Up For Spring

More new growth in the garden!

Texas Mountain Laurel (Sophora secundiflora). This is one of the plants that started to make new growth in February only to have those tender shoots freeze back a couple of weeks later. This time it’s taking off for real, although it looks like there might not be any blooms this year.

Mexican Buckeye (Ungnadia speciosa). I have a particular affection for this tree since I grew it from seed last year and put it in the ground in the fall. Finally I see tiny leaves at the top of its little stem.

American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana). This was one of the first plants that I added in 2023, but I almost lost it in the first summer here. It is looking much stronger now and has new leaves all the way to the tips of its branches.

Chile Pequin (Capsicum annuum). This plant was new last fall and apparently everything froze down to the ground during the winter. However, I see new shoots at the bottom now. The two shoots on the ground near the main branch are attached via the green stem.

Yellow Yucca (Hesperaloe parviflora). I already had the more common Red Yucca, but last year added two new Yellow Yuccas as pups dug out of a friend’s garden. I would expect these to take at least a year to establish, but one of them in particular seems to be gearing up for new growth in a major way.

Mealy Blue Sage (Salvia farinacea). I have a couple of these that were bought as plants, but the majority of the ones here were grown from seed. The seed-grown ones are developing sooner and are already blooming.

Standing Cypress (Ipomopsis rubra). Some of these are already blooming, just in time for the migrating hummingbirds that will be arriving soon.
