Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

Yellow Yucca Bloom Spike

From the date I first noticed the bloom spike on my new Yellow Yucca (Hesperaloe parviflora), March 15th, to the date when I saw flowers on the spike begin to open, April 7th, was 23 days. In that time it grew to a height of 38 inches, so an average of 1.7 inches a day. That’s pretty impressive!

Last year, one of the Red Yuccas produced a bloom spike which flowered for months and was heavily visited by hummingbirds. Since I don’t have a Red Yucca spike this year, I’m not able to compare whether hummingbirds prefer one over the other, but I expect to be able to do that in future years once these plants are all more established. In the meantime, here are some more photos of this year’s bloom spike.
