Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

Bee Fly

There’s a lot of Frogfruit (Phyla nodiflora) here and its tiny flowers are popular with little insect visitors. One day I saw this, which at first glance seems to be a bee but it’s actually a fly. (The photos aren’t great but it was moving around a lot!)

If my ID is correct, this particular member of the Bee Fly family has the scientific name Poecilanthrax lucifer and this article has a nice description of its appearance and lifestyle (with better photos!).

These insects by appearance and behavior mimic bumblebees. Like some bumblebees they are brown and furry and they make a buzzing sound when flying. However, unlike bees they have only two wings instead of four, large eyes, skinny long legs and shorter antennae. Their larvae may parasitize moth caterpillars.
