Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

Planting Powderpuff That Was Foraged From Houston

A few weeks ago when I was in Houston I spotted a plant growing wild that I wanted for my garden — Powderpuff aka Sunshine Mimosa (Mimosa strigillosa). I dug up some root and stem pieces and brought them to Seguin, but because I was travelling I didn’t have a chance to get them into pots properly until a couple of days later. They didn’t look at all happy, but I was hopeful that at least one of the 16 pots would grow.

Six weeks later I did have just one pot that was successful, so it was time to get it in the ground.

I’ve planted this on the mound behind the pond waterfall.

The idea is that it can ramble and help to prevent soil erosion, like the nearby Silver Ponyfoot (Dichondra argentea) is doing (the light colored ground cover in the photos below).
