On March 6, 2026 I started to hear toad calls around the pond after dark. So I went out with a headlamp to see what was going on.
Sure enough, I spotted this Gulf Coast Toad sitting on the pond edge.

Then, since I knew there were at least two voices, I looked around to find the other one. Eventually I saw another toad underwater, and after a minute or so it came to the surface.

Toad calling seems primarily to happen here during the spring. My observations last year suggest that the croaking happens when mates are being sought, but once mating happens and spawn is laid, then the croaking stops for a few weeks.
