Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

Red And Yellow Yucca Bloom Spikes

I have three clusters of Red Yucca (Hesperaloe parviflora) that were planted in 2023, and two clusters of a yellow variant that were planted in 2024. These are extremely drought-resistant, interesting to look at, and popular with hummingbirds. I gather from friends, though, that deer will eat the blooms.

In 2024 I saw one red bloom spike and in 2025 there were two yellow ones. Their fast growth impresses me — the first one grew 55 inches of height in just 27 days.

It looks like 2026 will be an even more productive year. It’s only March and I already see two red bloom spikes (growing out of one clump) and one yellow. True to form, they are growing rapidly. I first noticed the yellow one on March 16, and 12 days later it is already 24 inches tall.
