Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

Reseeding The Short Native Grasses

One of the first things I did here in the spring was to clear Bermudagrass from the perimeter of the back yard, seed the area with the Thunder Turf mix of three native grasses, and then disappointingly have the seed washed away or moved by torrential rain.

Here are links to posts describing those events: PlanningPreparationSeedingRain Crisis, Growth

As it happens, more of the original seed grew than I expected and what I have, I would consider to be a good start. I have purchased more of the same seed to fill in the gaps, and my plan is to divide the reseeding project into several installments, based on location in the garden, how the original seed grew, and other activities that are happening.

The first area that I’m tackling is at the back edge of the garden. For a few weeks during the drought, this area happened to receive some water run-off from neighboring sprinklers that the builder was using on newly laid turf. Consequently, this grass grew a little more (weeds did as well!) and has produced quite a bit of seed of its own.

To prepare the area, as best I could I pulled out anything that wasn’t a native grass grown from the original seed. I also replenished or created mulch barriers to define this particular seeding area.

I mixed one D-pack of Thunder Turf seeds with a bucket of planting mix soil and scattered the seeds onto areas that were bare ground.

To finish off, I scattered another half-bag of soil, stomped, and watered. As with the mid-height prairie grasses that I recently seeded, I don’t plan much intervention in the area for now, besides removal of anything that isn’t a grass.
