Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

I Have Baby Bluebonnets!

I sowed three kinds of wildflower in the center of the front lawn area a couple of weeks ago, but then the day after that we had torrential rain. I was not confident that the seeds had stayed put, so I repeated the seeding a few days later. The day after that second seeding I spotted several rosettes that looked like germinating Bluebonnet plants so, if true, the timing of that would mean they were actually from the first seeding.

The first leaves from a Bluebonnet seed look nothing like the regular plant leaf, so I had to wait until the next set of leaves appeared to be sure that my ID was correct. It was.

And a bonus!

Much to my surprise I also have a single Bluebonnet plant in the back garden, where I have not sown any of that seed. It’s further along than the ones in the front, so I don’t think either of my sowing projects are the source of this rogue seed. I’ll never know where it came from, but I welcome it as a volunteer. It’s lucky I recognized it just before I pulled it up, because it’s in my native grass area.
