Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

A Big Day In The Back Yard

I had been looking forward to this day for months! Seven cubic yards of enriched topsoil were delivered here earlier this week by Maldonado Nursery.

In preparation, the inner part of the back yard has had Bermudagrass removed or killed with the intent to plant or seed a variety of native plants. (The outside edge is being seeded with native grasses.) Here’s the “before”:

Of the seven cubic yards of soil delivered, I kept two at the front to use in leveling the front lawn.

The remaining five yards were carried to the back by a pair of Maldonado workers, first making it look as if I had been visited by giant moles.

Once the soil had been spread, it looked great! I know it won’t be long before weeds start to show through, but for a few hours it will be pristine. Here’s the “after”:

So this is my blank canvas for the fall planting projects. There will be a couple of plants introduced from pots, construction of mulched pathways, and the rest of the area will be sown with a variety of seed.
