Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

A Hummingbird Lunch Companion

I was out on my porch enjoying lunch when I was joined by a hummingbird, who visited both of the Scarlet Sage (Salvia coccinea) plants in my front bed. Hummingbirds are particularly attracted to red blooms, although they will visit other colors of flower as well.

Hummingbirds are not easy to photograph because of their rapid movement, but I got a few shots. And then I spent the rest of its visit just enjoying the view in real time.

I am still poor at bird identification, and one of my goals is to improve on that. So all I can say at this point is that this is definitely a hummingbird. Rufous? Allen’s? These species are on their fall migration south.

  1. Would a coral-coloured Porter Weed grow in your area? Hummingbirds LOVE them.

    1. I don’t know; I’m not familiar with that plant. I do know for sure that hummingbirds love Flame Acanthus, so I planted two of those although they’re still tiny.
