Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

I Was Away For A Week. What Did The Garden Do?

I was out of town for April 13-20, 2024. I had a helper to check on seedlings (to lightly water, and evict caterpillars), but other than that, the garden was left to fend for itself. What was different when I returned?

Many of the back yard plants had grown several inches, including Firewheel aka Indian Blanket (Gaillardia pulchella). The green patch in the middle of this photo is actually my Texas Mountain Laurel tree!…

Common Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) are now beginning to outgrow the Firewheels (no flowers yet, though)…

Frogfruit (Phyla nodiflora) is now occupying so much area behind the house that I’ll have to trim it back (again)…

…and the Three Sisters Garden is coming along nicely, despite the recent storm damage. Beans are eagerly growing and will probably want to climb soon.

In front of the house, the main thing I notice there is that the Bluebonnets are mostly seeding now, and so the wildflower meadow is losing its blue color. Fortunately, the Firewheels are still blooming happily.

I also see some new plants beginning to bud, but I’ll report on those later once I see full flowers. There is certainly a lot of vigorous growth at the moment!

Any noticeable difference yet between the corn planted with the fish and the corn planted without?

    1. Not yet, but I’m watching for that! There will also be a mound post mortem after the final harvest to see what happened to the fish.
