Rewilding My Lot

Converting a new developer lot into a nature ecosystem — my journey

A Precocious Standing Cypress

I seeded Standing Cypress (Ipomopsis rubra) last fall in the rear section of the back yard. This is a biennial plant, growing a short rosette in the first year and producing a tall (3-6 ft) flower stem in the second year.

I do indeed have dozens of first-year Standing Cypress rosettes, and so I’m hoping for a good display next year.

I’ve also bought another pack of Standing Cypress seeds to spread this fall so that I can have these flowers every year, not just every other year.

Rather to my surprise, one of the first-year plants has produced a flower stem about 3 feet tall, so apparently this one has rushed through two years of development in just one season.

    1. Indeed! There is so much yellow here with all the sunflowers that are blooming at the moment. The contrast is how I spotted it.
